Planning & Architecture
The ACME flooring company originally used a soft grained wood block from the bridges completion in 1894. ACME panels designed specifically to reduce the water ingress to the bridge structure and used from 1962 to replace the lightweight wooden cobbles with a long lasting equally light weight solution. In 2016 a complete overhaul of the bridge was required, closing the bridge to road traffic for 3 months although limited pedestrian access was still possible. The footpath needed to be removed and reinstalled to allow repairs and maintenance to the bridge structure beneath. It also allowed an opportunity to resurface the road carriageway.
The footpath construction is two layers of MIF ACME panels, the sub deck is a 36mm resin encapsulated engineered plywood plank. The top deck is a 36mm resin encapsulated engineered plywood plank with a Reference 26 aggregate dressing. Both layers were coated in the optional fire resistant resin. The two layers of panels overlap each other and bolted directly to the bridge structure to cope with over 1 million people walking across every year.

The road deck whilst also made of ACME panels, did not need to be replaced in its entirety. During destructive testing the panels were found to be solid and as a result only a handful of carriage panels needed to be replaced (those damaged in the testing) the remainder of the carriage way was planed back to the wood and MIF GRIP NT (a waterproof and wearing course) was applied to the surface of the wood. Wooden battens were placed during installation to keep the appearance of panels for those viewing from the Tower Bridge Viewing gallery above.
