Following a structural survey, it was reported that works were urgently required to strengthen and repair the 3-tonne limit bridge. As well as strengthening the steel work Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council chose to replace the wooden boards with a more durable and lighter weight, reinforced plastic deck.

The installation process was hindered and had to be postponed on several occasions due to the repeated flooding of the River Don, however, interestingly after its initial construction in 1887 the bridge was said to be 12ft above the highest flood tide.
